Yesterday evening’s panic buying has prompted the Asian Vision Institute to re-issue a commentary this morning. Supermarkets across the capital were a chaotic scene last night as people stocked up on staples ahead of the lockdown.
“Panic buying is when vast amounts of people suddenly buy and stock up on household products because they are worried that something bad is going to happen,” its authors said.
The commentary, originally published on March 26, said that “the intensity of people’s demand for any one particular good is causally affected by how much other people need it simultaneously”.
The institute recommended three points to address the issue – a quota policy, guarantee scheme and active education.
