Webinar on “Global Production Sharing: Implications for Export-Oriented Industrialization in Latecomer Countries”

On 06 May 2021, the Asian Vision Institute (AVI) and the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University co-hosted a regional webinar on “Global Production Sharing: Implications for Export-Oriented Industrialization in Latecomer Countries” via Zoom. It is part of a webinar series in collaboration with Forum Kajian Pembangunan, ANU Indonesia Project and ANU Poverty and Inequality Research Centre and supported by DFAT-funded Australian-ASEAN Council. The webinar was also livestreamed on ANU Indonesia Project’s YouTube Channel. A total of 87 people joined via Zoom and 64 were viewing on YouTube live. Most of the participants came from Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos, Nepal, Singapore, Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and beyond.

The speaker emphasized a global production sharing and manufacturing value chain concept, looking at two key aspects of global manufacturing value chain (GMVC): buyer-driven GMVC and producer-driven GMVC. The webinar also pointed out trends and patterns of global production sharing using data from the UN Comtrade database. The speaker also discussed opportunities and policy options, which could benefit nations in their effort to further enhance their global production sharing and manufacturing value chains and in helping them achieve the goal of successful export-oriented industrialization.

The webinar has contributed to promoting an understanding of relevant issues of GMVC to broaden participants’ understanding of international trade connectivity of countries in the world. The participants found the webinar interesting, important, and helpful, particularly concerning the local economic and policy contexts that either drive or deter a meaningful integration of the global production and supply chain networks.
